Dislocated shoulders are fun!
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
Guess what happened to me? I fell and dislocated my shoulder. Again!
While riding with my friend we slowed down and I could not clip out fast enough as I lost momentum. I tipped, fell and landed straight on my arm. Popped my shoulder straight out.
At the hospital they pumped me full of morphine and some other drugs. Morphine is not fun. Not fun at all. Anyway, they popped the arm back in, gave me a crappy brace and told me to get out. Thank you DeKalb Medical for being so friendly.
My shoulder is screwed up, but it is not as bad as it was in 2006 when I first dislocated it. I guess since it popped out to the front, rather than the bottom, it screwed up different tendons and muscles. Compared to last time, I have more motion and less pain with it. Maybe I'm used to it, maybe my muscles are stronger given that I have straightened my shoulder muscles. Anyway, I'm optimistic towards the recovery.
There are less than 11 weeks to the BP MS 150 Race. Should I be good to ride? Heck yeah!
When I dislocated my shoulder in September of 2006, it didn't take too long to get back to it.
9/22 - dislocated it
9/29 - rode on a BMX for a few feet
10/07 - back on the trampoline practicing BMX moves
10/20 - I was able to extend my arm all the way out
11/02 - back riding
So let’s set some dates here... given that I dislocated my shoulder on 1/27 I should be back on the bike on 3/10 ish? That shouldn't be bad. In the mean time I could spend some time with the stationary bike and work on my endurance.
Halfway there!

I'm on the metaphorical road to success. I have increased my gym presence significantly. I guess I have become one of the regulars as I see Baby-Eater (he looks like he is running on steroids), General Lee (Old guy that looks like General Lee), Spider Legs (All the veins in his legs look like a spiderweb) and Shorty (Small guy that can lift insane weights) nearly every time I'm there. Either that, or they live inside LA Fitness. I'm exited that with the next work engagement I'll be right across the street from Fitness 19 which was my summer gym. I guess getting a second gym membership because of convenience might be worthwhile.
